FEBRUARY DOG HOLIDAYS

Pet Dental Health Month

February • Pet Dental Health Month

Pet Dental Health Month is to make sure we are staying on top of our dog’s teeth and oral health.

Don’t turn your nose to Fido’s or Fluffy’s bad breath! That odor might signify a serious health risk, with the potential to damage not only your pet’s teeth and gums but its internal organs as well.

Studies have shown that a healthy mouth can actually add years to your pet’s life. 80% of dogs and 70% of cats will have some form of dental disease before they turn three.

Dental problems don’t just affect the mouth, either. Dental disease can have adverse effects on the heart, kidneys, and other major organs. By performing routine cleanings before there are significant problems, we help our pets stay healthier longer.

Sled Dog Day

February 2 • National Sled Dog Day

This day is dedicated to sled dogs.

In history, sled dogs were essential in northern areas for transportation.

In many areas, Sled dogs were the only mode of transportation as these regions were unreachable by other modes of transportation until airplanes finally became mainstream in the early 1900’s.

National Boston Terrier Day

February 19th • National Boston Terrier day

The Boston Terrier breed goes back to 1875, to a pooch named Hooper’s Judge (or Judge, for short) a special pooch of the bull and terrier breed.

Judge was soon bred to a white bulldog named Gyp, who had the blocky head that’s now characteristic of the breed.

Though the Boston Terrier was originally bred as a pit fighter, it didn’t take long for them to find their way into people’s homes and hearts. They are now the 21st most popular breed in the AKC registry and the state dog of Massachusetts.

If Pets Had Thumbs Day

March 3 • If Pet Had Thumbs Day

A day to ponder what your dog would do with this digit. Would he pick up his own poop? Text the neighbor dog? Hide the shampoo?

This thought-provoking day was created by Ruth and Tom Roy, who have created over 100 holidays.

Tom Roy says that he came up with the idea after having had cats and dogs in the house for 45 years, and realizing that their main dependency on humans was for food. So, he thought, how would things turn out if they didn’t need humans to turn that can opener?

Let’s get a grip and have some fun with this day!
